I've found that Kikuyu acts the opposite from what you've described where
I live (Marina, on the coast of California, near Monterey). It was quite
invasive, taking over planting beds in a couple of months if not checked.
I also remember it being a devil to pull out, often snapping off runners
which would of course sprout later. It also has almost entirely taken over
the back yard in about a 20 year time span. It also will attempt to find
it's way into anything, spreading from neighboring yards (although, a deep
enough barrier will keep it contained, but try telling the subdivision
contracters who installed our yard). I've even seen it break through
asphalt at a local school.
We have Bermuda grass on our very shady north side yard, and it still
hasnt spread much. In fact, it tends to grow upright there. I've found it
easier to get out than the kikuyu.
Because Kikuyu was always remembered by me as a terror from having to pull
it from planting beds as a kid, when i was 18, i asked my parents if i
could dig up the entire front "lawn" of it, and do away with it. I am not
at all sad to see it go.
I absolutely hate hate hate it, and sometimes i wish i could set off a
small nuclear device in the backyard to vaporize the rest :)
