just found this letter of yours (which I still amnged to refer to
correctly) in the wrong file after having proposed my counter-theory
about the identification.

 Re your suggestion that mulching such as you describe might inhibit
seedlings - I  have similar arrangements in a lot of my garden and have
never found this  any bar to re-seeding. In fact the seedlings really
seem to like starting in the mulch!
