Consider our California native Atriplex lentiformis, Quail Bush. It
needs no water after establishment, which is usually rapid, but will
tolerate even summer waterings. The plant has attractive, triangular,
gray/silver leaves and a dense habit. It takes any soil type including
alkaline or saline soils. It can be clipped into a hedge, and it produces
little mess. Unfortunately the flowers are barely noticable. I have
observed this plant growing with out any care along interstate 5.
