Ceanothus spots

Hello folks --
I have a Ceanothus 'Ray Hartman' here in rainy Eugene, Oregon. It's in a huge container with extremely well-drained soil, and gets a little shelter from a nearby roof but is mostly out in the rain. Its leaves are discolored and covered with dark spots -- looks very similar to black spot on roses. A cutting that I took of it last summer (read: a piece I broke off accidentally and stuck in another plant's pot) has been under a roof all winter in a different part of the yard and is fine. I've grown C. 'Julia Phelps' and 'Dark Star' for around five years, without the spotting problem. And of course there are other Ceanothus species that are native here. Does anyone know what the spotting might be, and what I can do about it? This variety is supposed to get huge; keeping it under a roof in the winter, if that's what it prefers, is already impractical unless I build it its own personal portable roof -- which will be impractical too when it gets 15 or 20 feet tall!
Abundant thanks,
-- Susannah
