Hi,
My thoughts are that if some of your seeds are not
coming up at all you may be cooking them in your Athenian sunshine; covered in
plastic wrap and shaded with white paper, it must be like an oven in the
styrofoam cups, particularly as these will allow little heat to escape through
the sides. Try experimenting with a soil thermometer. Some Mediterranean seeds,
specially Umbellifers need a period of cold to break dormancy, so leave them for
at least a year before throwing them away. Others such as Thapsia go into
dormancy soon after gerrminating to reappear the following year, so again
don't throw them away too soon. If you have been scattering your "failures"
around the garden, you may get a nice surprise next year as we did with some of
our "unsuccessful" Alliums last week
