Re: Acacia

There are several species with this pattern of leaves and inflorescences.
You would need to see more detail of leaf (technically a phyllode) such as
veining, apex, margin, position of nectary gland, also its dimensions, to
pin it down further. The recently issued Flora of Australia 2 volumes on
Acacia recognises 953 species for Australia alone!

Species that fit the same general pattern as your plant include A.
boormanii, A. caesiella, A. decora (some forms), A. fimbriata. And those are
only the southeastern-Australian species I am familiar with. There may be
others like it in South Aust. or Western Aust. There is no doubt it is an
Australian species.

I've had an Acacia in my front yard for a number of years. It
finally bloomed tis year. I believe it is a golden wattle. But that
is a common name and can't be trusted.

Chas, If Tony Rod cannot identify this more accurately for you with all his availble information, I wouldn't have a hope of doing better.

However, my one reference book on the Australian Flora (the Australian Wildflower Catalogue) allows me to be a bit more specific about the name Golden Wattle.

It seems this is not the common name for any old species, but is appled more specifically.

Of the better-known species they actually list, three have Gold in their name, one is the Gold dust Wattle (A. acinacea) another is the Sydney Golden Wattle (A.longifolia) and the third the Golden Rain Wattle (A. prominens). Only one species (A pycnantha) is apparently acrtually known just as Golden Wattle and this they say is the official floral emblem of Australia.

You are quite likely familar also with the Silver Wattle (A. dealbata) which is a very good garden plant, but in this case the adjective refers to the colour of the leaves rather than the flowers. Incidently the cultivar of this Wattle popular in NZ is even more showy, having its leaves flushed with plum purple.
