Dear Nan,
Do you live in the city, suburbs or country?
Beaver will eat tree trunks but if you live in the suburbs or city, my guess is
either roof rats, rabbits or possibly a deer rubbing its antlers on the
trunk? I know gophers love figs but they eat the roots. Have you
tried putting a wire collar made from aviary wire placed loosely around the tree
trunk to protect it?
