Hello,
Karrie and Moira - the reason I want 5 gallon
plants is I hate to wait several years to get the effect of a larger
specimen - I just want my front yard to look more full or mature this
year. When I get the larger plants I usually score the rootball after
taking the plant out of the container especially if it looks rootbound.
But I do agree that smaller plants seem to catch up to the larger ones in a year
or two - some of the 3 inch herbs I planted last May are already up to 5
gallon size this year. I had two purple smoke bush when I lived high
in the mountains a few years back - the purple of the leaves have an almost
dusky suede appearance and the fall color was spectacular.
Jason - I am wondering if Karen Platt is a
landscaper and if I saw one of her landscaped homes on a tour in the bay area a
few years back - or perhaps a similar landscaper's style? - this is where
I got my inspiration for this garden - from the plant palette I saw at
one of the homes on the tour. I will definitely check out her books - they
sound interesting - thanks for the information.
