This lovely plant appeared in a few of my large shrub containers last summer. Now that I'm about to plant out the shrubs, I'm wondering if I should allow the fireweed to go along with them to be part of the hedge I'm making. Will my hedge become a monoculture of fireweed? I can deadhead it before seeding, so it is primarily the rhizomes I'm concerned about. How do they compare with, for examples, blackberries which I find easy to control by twice-a-year pruning of canes and roots, and can easily eradicate from an area if desired, versus wild roses or spearmint, both of which I have never beeen able to get rid of and can only keep in check?
I'm in western Oregon, zone 6. Thanks very much for any experiences you all care to share!
