Re: Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) -- will I regret it?

If the fireweed suddenly appeared in your pots, do you know where it came from? Are there seeds floating around your area, ready to germinate in disturbed ground? Or did you buy the pots of shrubs which came from the nursery with the fireweed already established?

Whether fireweed becomes a nuisance depends upon your conditions. I have one fireweed which has been growing near a viburnum for ten years or more, and has not increased or seeded.

I suggest removing the fireweed from the shrubs and planting some of it in a place where you can monitor it to see how it likes your garden.
