On dry ridges and hillsides even within range (I'm talking Monterey
County here), they tend to be rather short. As you head to the
southern end of their territory, they get increasingly restricted to
valleys and gullies and areas where they can get some year round
moisture. The really tall ones grow with ample year round moisture and
usually near a creek (at least as far as I've seen down in Big Sur.
