However, there's a very good chance that the nursery is right on this particular plant.  Ben is looking to buy a Bay Area and points north native in Southern California, where it is going to be well out of its comfort range and, even well watered, will be generally unhappy about the lack of fog and cool weather.  I've seen them here in the L.A. area, and they never do seem to get very tall...

It definitely gets taller than 50 ft in the SF Bay
Area. Not to offend anyone but In my experience many
nursery labels underestimate the eventual size of
plants they sell. Most people want to believe that
trees in particular will fit in their gardens and I
think that some nurseries underestimate deliberately
in order to make a sale. But then maybe I'm just a
jaded and cynical gardener.
