RE: Curious why this site seems so quiet?

David,
I, for one, have always enjoyed and appreciated your posts and responses,
and have wondered what happened to this forum as well.

There has always been either the "reply to sender" or "reply to all" option
for sending replies, so I don't think that fully explains the drop off in
messages.
I kind of thought it had more to do with blogging taking hold as well as the
Facebook phenomenon, as I notice that several other plant related general
forums are also seeing greatly reduced traffic. Strangely enough, some
plant forums that are single genus or family related seem to still be quite
popular, and growing in traffic.

Re: the MGS forum web site, it seems to me that it is almost exclusively
geared to those in Europe and/or the Mediterranean Basin, and hasn't
developed the breadth this forum has had over the years. I also sense that
there may have been some resentment on the preponderance of California
topics and maybe the people posting on the MGS forum prefer the focus to
remain more centered on the Mediterranean Basin. The other pet peeve I have
with the MGS forum is that everything is segmented into various topics,
which seems much more limiting in my opinion. While I've seen some
excellent posts on plants native to the Mediterranean basin on that forum,
the more general posts about many plants from around the world that are
commonly grown here in California seem almost ignorant of information that
is taken for granted here in California about these plants.
Perhaps we are just spoiled by having such a great generalist resource of
the Sunset Western Garden Book Encyclopedia as a basic resource.

I also found it curious that there seemed very little overlap between the
two forums in terms of who posts where. Just my opinions, and I don't mean
to offend anyone with my observations. I never felt like I quite fit within
the mold of either group in any case, as while I garden in a Mediterranean
Climate, it isn't necessarily the style of gardening I do exclusively.
Hopefully my posts over the years were received in the spirit with which I
wrote them, to share my enjoyment of growing the plants and designing
gardens here in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as the posts on the job
I was doing in Saudi Arabia when I first started posting on this forum back
in 1999.

As our version of a Mediterranean Climate here in the Bay Area is rather
distinctive compared to most; much cooler in summer and almost daily marine
fogs, what does well here isn't necessarily the same plants that do well in
most other Mediterranean Climate zones around the world. I've got an equal
attraction to subtropical plants as well as cloud forest and desert species,
all of which do well here with slight adaptations, supplemental summer
irrigation in moderation being one of them.
