Hi All! IT'S FINALLY HAPPENED. OLIVIER MENTIONED CISTUS &
I WISH I HAD 12 ACRES. THE WORLD'S ULTIMATE CISTACEOUS
GURU IS KEN MONTGOMERY WHO OWNS ANDERSON VALLEY NURSERY IN BOONVILLE CALIF.
DON'T HAVE THE ADDRESS.
HE HAS SIX CLONES OF C. SALVIFOLIUS 'PROSTRATUS' FROM
FULLY PROSTRATE TO 3' TALL. HE WAS THE PERSON WHO FINALLY GRASPED THAT
WESTERN HILL'S C. 'BLANCHE' WAS IN FACT X AGUILLARII. I HAD NO IDEA THERE
WERE SO MANY SPECIES & HYBRIDS AS OLIVIER SUGGESTED. IN CALIFORNIA
zone 9/10 (sunset's 16/17) all THE SPECIES & HYBRIDS ARE HARDY TO BELOW 20 d.
F. BUT MANY ARE QUITE SHORT LIVED.
HERE WHERE I HAVE GROWN SEVERAL DOZEN VARIETIES I WOULD SAY CISTUS
populifolius & laurifolius are the hardiest, along with x Sunset and the
rather jejuene x corbariensis.
I do however doubt that any would be hardy in zone 6B.
Ken has wanted to start a "Cistaceous Society" and I've offered my home for a
first meeting. Perhaps Olivier would start saving seed that he hand
polinated--they are a notoriously promiscuous bunch-we'd love that here. If
you garden with them seedlings are always popping up--of the ones you don't
want!
I would love to get involved with an international Viburnum
Society--am already on the board of the Amer. Rhodo. Society.
And there really is a group I help found 8 years ago, The Bay Area
Hortisexuals--which is a big medit-plants group of people who suffer from
"terminal plant avarice" and will try to grow anything! They are fearless
and their motto is. "NO PLANT IS SAFE'! For info contact: Richard Ward at
The Dry Garden in Oakland, CA. I know they're off to Lotusland next
month--trip organized by Robin Parer, owner of Kentfield's
GERANIACEAE nursery. Of course CAL HORT is the oldest medit-plants group in
existence--since the freeze of 1932.
We meet monthly in SF. Many members out of the area. Sean
could furnish details.
These occasional explosions of type are so necessary when
you spend every day gardening. It's wonderful just knowing you're all out
there...somewhere. Best to all...spring is sprung
the grass is riz...i wonder where the flowers is!
