RE: Petrea volubilis

Hi, Graham.

Petrea volubilis is a vigorous (up to 40 feet), flowering vine native to
Central America. The five-rayed, pale blue or lilac-colored flowers appear
in hanging clusters. It goes by a number of common names: Queen's Wreath,
Purple Wreath, Bluebird Vine, Sandpaper Vine. I believe it is a native of
the cloud forest, so it is most probably frost-tender and would require
supplemental water in the summer. I have no personal experience with the
plant, but I live in a climate very similar to yours, and nearly everything
I grow requires supplemental water in the summer, so that wouldn't
discourage me from trying it. Good luck.

Kurt

Help! Does anybody out there know anything about Petrea volubilis that I
have seen in a local nursery? I would love to grow it, but I am not sure
what conditions it likes. Does any other Medit-plants person grow it? I fear
that it might be too dry here in the Algarve in southern Portugal, where we
have long hot dry summers and wet (but not this year) winters. We sometimes
get a few early morning ground frosts.

Graham in Sunny Portugal!
