Re: Prize Pest

I'm surprised no one has mentioned bermuda grass. It's the bane of my
existance.

I don't mind the oxalis (yes, it's edible; chew on the sour stems and spit
out the skins--the flowers are also nice in arrangements, especially with
narcisus). The ivy can be hacked back and doesn't invade my gardening
beds. The oxtonuge isn't so bad if you get it young. The blackberries
need to be weeded out but if you let some grow in an isolated area you'll
get the best blackberries in the world. Yum! (they freeze really well
too).

There is no use for bermuda grass except for those people who insist on
having lawns in places lawns were never meant to be (like Arizona).
Nothing kills it. It grows under buildings. It comes up under several
feet of mulch. It loves water and drought, sun and shade, heat and cold,
cultivated soil and hard packed soil, growing up, down, sideways, and
across. The only thing it doesn't like is hard killing frosts (it survived
the 3-day freeze of Dec 1998 with temps down to 24 degrees F with hardly a
pause).

Bermuda grass is my vote for most annoying plant pest.
