If you look very closely at the leaves where they are attached to
their sheathing bases or along the edges, you should see either the
occasional, tiny globule of a clear syrupy substance or, if it has had
a chance to solidify, a semi-transparent grain, almost like a grain of
sugar. In fact this is precisely what it is, albeit containing only
tiny amounts of sucrose, but nevertheless enough to make ants come and
raid.
