Hi David , and all,
I thought "Invisible Gardens" (aptly titled) was great too, esp. the section
on Roberto Burle-Marx Luis Barragan and Isamu Noguchi, who all entered the
field "sideways" with a very art oriented interdisciplinary approach...
On the other end of the historical spectrum, I'm reading a book on ancient
Roman gardens, just starting (into the second chapter) but the intro and
first chapter give a great overview of ancient gardens, and it's wonderful
how shared the concerns are that influence the design (urban experience and
the desire for a private outdoor space, dry climate and water conservation,
good food to eat, the pleasure of eating outdoors on a warm
evening..........some pleasures never change.....
Very good visual/ architectural details throughout .
the book is "Ancient Roman Gardens" by Linda Farrar, published by Sutton
1998
