Pawlonia tomentosa

A number of people have commented that this tree doesn't stand out very
well, the blossoms being rather pale, and also that they seed easily and
become weeds.

I have seen a few in the San Francisco Bay area, which is a
mediterranean climate, and where they do not seed. They are very
thirsty trees, which is probably why they don't become weeds in this
climate. There are two at the U.C. Botanical garden in Berkeley. They
are large - about 15 meters in height, a crown almost as wide, with
massive trunks at the base. The roots grow down into a stream. One
really needs a large space in which to grow them. From a distance, they
are quite striking, being a mass of lavender blooms. The flowers
remain for several weeks in the early spring before any leaves come out.
