We had one of these when I was a kid in Oregon -- the Paulownia --
and it was huge, tall as the one in the Berkeley Botanical garden.
We always called it the "Empress Tree" and it certainly was stately
all year round, with its great form, wonderful leafs and of course,
delightful when filled with its annual display of blue flowers.
People used to come and take pictures of it. Of course, as a kid, I
was always embarrassed by all of this. My uncle was a maritime
insurance investigator and he always brought back seeds and cuttings
from his travels. We had our own botanical garden.
