Jan,
I'm glad you also enjoyed that Danish web site, it
kind of stopped me in my tracks when I came across it,
I wanted to try and identify every questionable
Aeonium I have! I had looked at the photo and
description of A. subplanum, and the size and shape do
look very similar, but my plant does not have
pubescent leaves, and it offsets freely. As it is a
shy bloomer, I don't know how well it sets seed.
Since the web site says it is rare in gardens and sets
few offsets, I assumed that this is not what I have.
I also find that they get much larger if grown is some
shade, but it doesn't get that hot here along the bay,
so it gets equally large in full sun here. I wish
there was a good reference collection around that was
well labeled, but even though Strybing has many
Aeoniums, few are labeled. I'm not sure how many
species/cultivars the Bancroft Garden still has, as
Walnut Creek is not ideal for them, either too hot in
summer or cold in winter, and they must be protected
in the garden, or brought under shelter. I didn't
remember seeing that many in the garden, although it
has been some years since my last visit.
Your class sounds like fun.
Regards,
David
And it looks like we will squeek through January
without frost!
