As I read this, I immediately thought of
my own (despised) Morus alba
which is growing adjacent to the lawn and wondered why I don't have any root problems whereas one of my neighbors has roots from her tree everywhere. I wonder whether the fact that mine is planted above a septic tank leach field has anything to do with it? The roots get all the water they need without having to go searching for it.... A word to the wise: Your thirsty tree will undoubtedly eventually invade your septic system and completely clog your leach field. Close friends of ours were in your situation and let it go until they had to dig an entirely new tank and leach field, a costly project for a despised tree. Since you obviously loathe the tree I would exorcise your garden of it immediately and regarden with shallow rooted plants in its place.
