new neighbors

We also want suggestions for some sort of bushy planting to hide a fence we
had to put in because of those same neighbors.  Our location is northern
San Diego County about 35 miles inland at 1800' in a small east west
valley.  Water is a concern as we have about an acre to do something with.

We have had to hide our neighbors as well, and have had great results with Eucalyptus nicholii - Nichol's peppermint leaved eucalyptus.  It has lovely fine foliage with reddish stems on the immature branchlets.  If you let it have its head it will shoot right up rather narrowly( we have one by itself that is 35-40ft tall at 3-1/2 years), but some rather merciless topping has produced a beautiful thick hedge of trees now about 8-10 feet tall in two years. Buy the smallest plants you can, and encourage side growth, which also helps beef up the trunks.  They will like supplemental water the first couple of summers, but after that should do fine on their own or with perhaps a deep soaking once a month.    Karrie Reid
