It is that time of the year again. I hear the screech of brakes on the
street followed by excited voices."What IS that" they say. Informed that
the gorgeous shrub they see is Phylica pubescens, the next question is just
as predictable: "Where can I get that?". And that is my problem. My plant
is one of two that germinated from a seed package from Chiltern, and I have
not had much success propagating it. Over the years I have zapped Phylica
seeds with smoke extract and/or gibberelic acid and tried to have the
temperature differences beween day and night temperatures close what is
recommended, but I still only get a few plants every time. I tried tip
cuttings last summer, some have made a substantial amount of callus, but
not any roots. Still hoping ...
Anyone out there with better results or any observations to add?
Also, my plant never sets any seeds. I surmise the lack of the proper
pollinator but it could be something else like the need for pollen from
another plant. Does anyone know?
I would appreciate any leads with this. Phylica pubescens is a stunning
plant, and I would love to make it more available.
