Cunning of you to think of this Judy!
As far as I know the seed sold in this way is still viable, but I don't
have definite information on this.
If no-one can tell you for sure you could of course do a germination
check, laying some seeds between pieces of moist paper towel, or if you
have a seed sprouter you could no doubt use that.
I can't find a figure for the germination time of annual flax but
perennial kinds take about three weeks.
If it _is_ viable and you want to grow yourself a bed, sow direct. Flax
is one of those fussy plants which does not take at all kindly to being
transplanted.
