It is a great plant. I remember a hedge of it in my neighborhood
when I was a child. The pattern of the foliage fascinated me then
although I didn't know what plant it was at the time. I was told it was
boxwood
so when I actually got introduced to real boxwood (Buxus)I was
confused...

Of those on David's list of alternatives, I can certainly recommend Hebe
buxifolia - one of the best-looking, hardiest, and most easy-tempered and
bug-proof workhorses it's possible to imagine. And it makes a very effective
hedging plant, provided that the hedge can be fairly uncorsetted and
informal.
