I had a rose I wanted to move, and had trouble digging it out because the roots went under a path, so tied a van to it and dragged it out. It's doing just fine.
I have been thinking about attempting exactly this method with a 12-foot catalpa! It's growing in a nearby creek bed, and needs to be removed. And I do want a catalpa for my new garden. I don't have a van, just a small Corolla wagon. Any advice? I thought I'd try a come-along (hand winch) first, and if that didn't work I'd try the car. And of course chop around the base with a shovel, pruning saw, etc. first. How did you attach to and protect the stems? Or were you not concerned about them, figuring that (unlike a tree) new ones would be growing all the time? Anyone have experience with catalpa root systems, or transplanting large ones?
Always grateful for the advice,
