I had a rose I wanted to move, and had trouble digging it out because the roots went under a path, so tied a van to it and dragged it out. It's doing just fine.

My experience with roses is that, much like weeds, they are hard to kill. I have stuck canes in the ground that had been left in a bucket, or left out in the winter, and they always rise up just fine. My brother once pulled up some pieces from and abandoned building site in the San Joaquin Delta and brought them to my farm house, where I promptly forgot them. A month later I stuck them in the ground and they did just great. I would prune them severely, transplant a nice-sized root ball, give it a good shot of root starter and let it be.--
