3 roses in a hole

Years ago during the tours I lead to rose gardens overseas (June/July) I started noticing some gardens had better looking shrubs than others. So I got down on my hands and knees and found that three plants had been put there. Then I talked to the gardeners - and they said that if the original plants were small it was very easy to put three roses in one hole. Why three? Because they meld and become one big plant - even if one of them dies. They hold one another up. The canes on the outer rim tend to fall over, creating a bush that is full, from the ground up to the top - with blooms covering the plant(s). I have lots of photos to prove all this. But I have not seen this done in the US (well, in my garden now).
