RE: African basil

Richard,

The species name sounds so exotic - no wonder it is such a beautiful plant.  Will let you all know if mine makes it.

I did hear on one of those gardening programs from Fresno that you can fill milk jugs full of hot water and place them at the base of the plant near the trunk or main stem or (under the cover you put over the plant if it is small enough) to help them make it through a frost night.  This would be for plants in the ground that can't be moved.  This solution was recommended to a gentleman who had some avocado trees.  Sounds logical - but I wonder how long the water stays warm in one of those jugs - if you filled the jugs at midnight - you would still need at least six or eight hours of warmth.  Sounds like a good science project for some school children.
