I own one cymbidium orchid. It is a wonderful orange/red one that is most
unusual. For ten years, it has faithfully starting opening buds on
February 1. We laugh because my husband's birthday in February 2 and we
call it our birthiday cymbidium. It is huge and sits on the front porch.
I usually bring in pots of daffodils and early tulips to surround it and
celebrate our wonderful early spring and Valentine's Day.
Well, this year, it started blooming the day after Christmas and with first
the warm rain and now the warm sun, the thing is in full bloom. I haven't
even had the heart to move it to the front porch. This weekend I go out to
begin the winter pruning and clean up chores and am disappointed to have
all the spring stuff starting to bloom before I've even done my mulching.
