Re: Leonitis leonurus

: Hi Jane: I've also grown the white form, from a rooted cutting obtained
from a now defunct California nursery. Unfortunately, here in zone 6b, it
did not bloom before frost (which comes in mid-October), so I gave the
entire plant away late one starry night to a grower from more temperate
Long Island, NY and haven't seen or heard of it since. In mid October it
had reached about 3-1/2 'in height and width and looked wonderful, and was
just budding up. Perhaps it is
triggered to bloom by longer night length. I can usually get Leonotis
leonurus and the nettle leaved one to bloom just before frost, because by
then they are so tall (8-10') that they are above the frost which catches
just the low lying parts of the garden. Their bases seem at least
resistant to the first fewfrosts.I've also had good success cutting the
bloom stems and hanging them to dry, they retain a good orange color for at
least two to three years. but even their rounded, graduaed green bracts
make an ornamental dried material! Joanne
