I've always understood the list to be about plants that can be grown in any
mediterranean-type climate. That seems perfectly reasonable - and surely
it's reasonable to allow that "can" to include some pretty hard work to
accommodate some demanding customers? After all, even people living in the
most authentic Mediterranean climates of all have been known to wield a
watering can during that long dry summer!
