i too have had experience with this tenacious devil of a plant :). I
did the same thing as Katherine. IMy front yard was a lawn of this and
over 17 years the runners and stolons had turned into a foot thick
mass. So i had to cut it out in chunks. These were easy to remove. Once
you had it lifted and separated you had very few runners. So, i dug the
top layer and i too let pieces grow. My front yard has sand for soil so
pulling out the runners was no problem as the sand was very loose ( and
dry!). Persistence is the key!
