I'm not sure how cold it gets in zone 5, but my experience of E. gunni
is that it will withstand prolonged freezing down to -5C without
sustaining appreciable damage. At -10C, all but the thickest branches
and trunk are severely damaged and quickly display 'bark split'.
Temperatures below this will often kill all top growth, but the plant
may regenerate from its root stock.

In 1981/82, when I lived further north, we had a terrible winter with
temperatures which failed to rise above -10C for several weeks. Night
time lows fell to between -15 and -20C. A 7 year old, 30ft specimen
of E. gunni died right back to the root stock, however masses of fresh
young shoots reappeared from below ground during the following spring
and the last time that I saw the plant, it was a magnificent specimen
of nearly 40ft with 5 sizeable trunks.

It would appear that E. niphophylla ( a much more attractive tree in
my opinion) is much hardier and a stand of 5 'coppiced' specimens
were barely 'touched' during that winter.
