Re: White-flowering ceanothus?

There are two possible species you could have seen. One is C. verrucosus,
the warty-leafed species. C. verrucosus is strictly southern Californian
coastal. Another early species C. megacarpus (Bigpod). This one is also
native to southern California. In the Sepulveda Pass I'd bet it is C
megacarpus as C. verrucosus is found further south only in San Diego
County. C. verrucosus is in full bloom right now both near the coast as
well as somewhat further inland near Del Dios - the part that did not burn
last year. By the way, yesterday I saw C. megacarpus in flower much outside
its natural region - in at the Strybing Arboretum.
