Living below the deer line in Berkeley, I sympathize with those of you who suffer
the plagues of these white-tailed cloven-hoofed rats. I jsut saw advertised an
expensive spray that is supposed to make anything unpalatable to deer - "Deer
Off", listed in a catalog of Gardens Alive ( purveyor of organic and otherwise
ecologi cally correct garden products), $17.99 a auart, said to cover 50 3-4 ft
shrubs. Whether it actually works or not, I have no idea - it might be worth a
try. (they have a phone order number at 812-537-8650). If I lived in the areas
frequented by deer, I would probably resort to a fence, and let them browse my
neighbor's gardens, or perhpas get a crossbow (won't wake the neighbors) and learn
how to prepare venison. I understand they are not afraid of dogs. The Berkely
Botanic garden is reportedly vistied occasionly by a large feline predator, with a
resultant reduced deer problem. Could be an urban myth. I hope not. I like
cats. Attracting such a cat to your neighborhood is the most ecologically sound
solution, although wherever you are, you no dobut have neibors who would become
hysterical should one appear.
