Re: Deer & California Natives fences/repellant
Deckerella: A fence is probably the only sure fire method of keeping your
plants from becoming deer food. Unfortuneatly, tall fences can be very
expensive and block views. The solution (if one doesn't want chain-link
fence) is to have a cable fence - the entire fence being made of horizontal
cables, 12" or so apart, strung tightly through fence posts. You can see
through it, almost as if it weren't there, and the deer won't try to jump
through it. Should be eight feet high.
A long term solution might be bring wolves back to the bay area hills -
although I hear coyotes are beginning to come in (heard/seen in Orinda I
am told) and will munch on young deer when they can catch them.
On a related note- does anyone know of a substance that will keep cats
away? There are a number of uninvited cats that frequent my garden area,
and are continually knocking over potted plants, and breaking off branches
as they jump through the pots. The only fence that keeps them out is
chicken wire, and to fence the whole yard with chicken wire is not
practical, let alone ugly.
