Re: Tree dahlia (D. imperialis) question....

I've grown a tree dahlia for the last couple of years. It definitely likes
a good amount of sun but I think it likes a lot of water. Every year, the
first good frost kills it back to the ground but it comes back the next
year. And it's a lot milder here than where you are. Unfortunately, at
least in Menlo Park, the frost usually hits when it is in full bloom
(Christmas week this year).

The first year, it put out a single stalk about 12 feet high. This year it
put out 5 stalks, varying from 8 to 10 feet.

I've read that the Aztecs used the stems for water pipes. Anyone know what
kind of climate they had?
