Graham: Although very slow growing I wonder if Garrya elliptica would enjoy
growing against the North side of your wall. I used to use it for London
Gardens, but I am now in Istanbul and it is one of the many plants I would
love to try here. So if you should plant it then please report back to me
on its success or otherwise... Other suggestions off the top of my head:
Tetrastigma (Kangaroo vine) Ficus pumilla (+ the variegated one), Plumbago
(? how shady is the location ?), Hedera goldheart, Hydrangea petiolaris?
