Actually people here who plant them, dont seem to mind the size. In
fact, they do take up quite a bit of space but people would just trim
the lower branches to keep space clear to walk under. A neighbor of
ours used to trim his like a christmas tree (and still does). Funny
thing about it is, it keeps getting taller. Every year i keep wondering
how long before he couldnt decorate it with just a ladder and had to go
to a cherry picker!

Stradling my yard and my neighbors yard, we used to have a monterey
pine. It was fairly tall and it grew close to the sidewalk and near
powerlines! It was a beautiful tree, except it had rotted out on the
inside. I think a branch fell, so the neighbors had a tree removal
service come in and take it out.
There are three mature monterey pines in a neighbors yard up the
street. All are about 50 feet high! Quite attractive and all have the
classic rounded top. I cant remember not seeing those trees and the
skyline they create, in this neighborhood.
Monterey Pines are i think the most common tree in peoples yards,
besides Monterey Cypresses here.
