The fact that something will eventually overwhelm an average sized property in
no way deters the average, horticulturally challenged California gardener.
One can drive down the street in any neighborhood and see numerous examples of
trees and shrubs that are mutilated annually (or more often) in order to keep
them from overwhelming the neighboring houses, sidewalks, driveways, streets,
or plantings.

On the other hand, there are houses (very expensive houses) in the Del Monte
Forest. Many of them are completely surrounded and overshadowed by mature
Monterey pines, without apparent harm to either the trees or the houses. Of
course, there is a world of difference between the Del Monte Forest and the
environment of the typical California suburb. God knows how and where to
plant Monterey pines for maximum beauty and effect. The average California
gardener does not.
