P. radiata has been a problem tree here in Oakland as our soils tend to be
clayey
and the tree's root systems quite shallow. Every winter some inappropriately
planted Pine takes out another home and sometimes its occupants in the hills
of Oakland or Berkeley. This species was one of the ones which helped spread
the '91 fire, along with Eucalyptus globulus and others. That said it is a
magnificent tree and one of my favorite pines. It just needs the right home.
On a similar note in my Oakland flatlands home garden lives an 80 ft Douglass
Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) which is at least as old as my little cottage if
not older. I don't know which came first. I would not have planted it myself
in so small a place but I love it and the thriving urban Ravens who occupy it.
I have finally settled on a plant pallette (far different from a Northwestern
one) which works under it so we are all happy.
I am slogging away lonesomely at the roses on the roof garden this month and
appreciate greatly this list...
