The small fly-like insects you describe could well be hover flies - they
love high pollen flowers like these. If that's what they are, count yourself
blessed. In their larval form, they are voracious predators of aphids and
other small soft-bodied insects. Hold your nose and wish them luck!

...One flower ive always thought smelled particularly gross were Margurite
flowers (Chrysanthemum frutescens). Its not a nice smell, and often the
flowers have some sort of small fly or a fly like insect among the
flowers.
