The Gardener's Guide to South African Plants is currently
out of print. The author's (Pitta Joffe) husband recently
informed me that there is consideration that this book
might be reprinted, if enough confirmed order can be found.
There are about 2/3 of the number of confirmed order already.
I was curious if people here might be looking for the book,
in whcih case it might be timely to speak up. If so, feel
free to contact me and I will forward you to the right party.
I have a copy and find it a nice work. It has some problems,
as do most books, but it is full of wonderful photos of species
I had no idea existed. Along side these are many of the 'tried
and true' plants we've come to know so well here in California
- an interesting experience for me! The text is a bit scant,
and I think Pitta could have done better in helping to point
out whether the plant was a summer rainfall or winter rainfall
species (or tolerant or each). Many of the place names are
difficult for those of us unfamiliar with SA. But by and large,
it is a worthwhile work and certainly a good addition to a
reference collection or even coffee table.
