possible field trip to Alcatraz Island, SF Bay

For the Mediterranean Garden Society in No. Calif., I am
looking into the possibility of a field trip to Alcatraz
Island, in the middle of San Francisco Bay. While this
infamous 'rock' has been famous for the prison no longer
in use, it is also host to a wealth of plants brought
there to 'cheer up' and place and 'rehabilitate' the
prisoners, and which still exist happily and without care.
Information about this phenomenon can be found in the
book, Gardens of Alcatraz (see Medit-Plants web page
http://www.support.net/Medit-Plants/inprint/goa.html).

Since dry, unirrigated gardens are an interest of mine, and
since this is definitely aligned with the mission of the
Mediterranean Garden Society, I'm thinking of arranging
such a tour. I was curious if people here in Medit-Plants
would be keen on such a trip? Probably the spring would
be best - a good time to see the various plants in full
flower. An excerpt from Russ Beatty's writing in the
above book can be found in Pacific Horticulture, Summer
1997 (vol 58, num 2). If you thing this might be of
interest, please let me know. If you wish to know more
about the Mediterranean Garden Society's activities in No.
California, send me your snail-mail address and I will add
you to the list for the next newsletter.
