FW: san francisco & monterey

A nice long day trip can be had in Oakland and Berkeley, across the bay from
San Francisco:

- Start with the Huckleberry Botanic Preserve in the Oakland hills. You can
see a native plant communities in their natural state; predominant are
madrone (Arbutus), bay (Umbellularia), hazelnut (Corylus), Garrya, and
manzanita (Arctostaphylos).  Almost all of the trail is cool and shaded;
it's about 2 miles if you take the full loop, or 1/2 mile if you stick to
the level upper trail. There's interpretive guide at the trailhead.

- Move a few miles north to the Botanic Garden in Tilden Park. This 10 acre
garden is devoted to California native plants, divided into ten sections
representing regions of the state, and has a few thousand specimens.

- Drop down the hill to the University of California's garden. A
fair-sized native area, but also areas from around the world. I
particularly enjoyed looking at the matorral area in the Chilean section.

- If you haven't dropped from exhaustion, finish at Berkeley Horticultural
Nursery, which has several dozen native plant species for sale, as well as
other interesting tidbits.
