Snakes?

Any herpetologists out there?
I just found a beautiful, small snake in my garden -- 3' long,
slender, small head. Yellow with regular brown blotches, much like a
giraffe in color. Is this a young kingsnake? If so, will they go
into gopher burrows to eat gophers? And if so, do I risk poisoning
him/her if I put gopher bait deep into gopher mounds?
