Nan, et. al:
I grew Sesbania tripetii (maybe now Daubentonia
tripeti or what may be grown is actually Daubentonia
punicea) in San Diego 25 years ago.
I started mine from seed (as easy as sweet pea, with a
soaked or notched seed). My little trees grew fast --
they LOVED water. Mine had a lot of sun but not full
sun. I'm sure it would bloom best in full sun but it
was quite lush in a little shade.
It tolerated quite heavy ("Poway Conglomerate") soil
on the Mesa there, and required little care other than
the water and pruning to make sure it became a tree.
It didn't take long to come into blooming age and,
boy, were the blooms spectacular.
I vaguely remember (or maybe I assumed) that it was
short-lived (much like so many fast-growing
leguminaceous trees).
It seemed to be hardy enough for the Mesa area there.
