We grow it here South of Bristol, England. It sets masses of seed and
takes about three to four years from seed to flowering. Personally I
wish it was far more invasive than it is, as it's very beautiful and a
great seller when in flower. Dilys Davies in her "Alliums" (essential
reference book) says it grows in damp shady woods in Southern Europe
and even on clay in Northern England so what it will make of LA is
anyone's guess. It certainly doesn't like our environment and so I
suspect we are giving it too much light
